Comfort is perhaps the ultimate luxury

Took a moment out on the terrace this morning. The leaves on the trees have finally burst out, reflecting that winter has finally released its grip and summer has now embraced the city.

I'm looking forward to having friends over for an al fresco meal, breaking bread and enjoying a special beverage.

It wasn't long ago that we were in the grips of the Covid scourge. Thankfully, it's our second summer without it, and now I feel like we can finally relax.

And the vision of a summer evening on the terrace, sharing good times with friends, seems wonderful.

Being together with people we care about is a fundamental desire of human society.

Witold Rybczynski, in his fabulous book A Short History of an Idea, Home, noted that "domestic well-being is a fundamental human need that is deep-rooted in us." It's about connection and validation that our ideas and what matters to us matter to others too.

It’s about connecting with people who care about things we care about. Spending time with friends and family on our balcony or terrace allows us to tell stories, sing a song, laugh out loud, explore new perspectives, share ideas, and... food. I’m sure grateful that we can finally "Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Those days of soda and pretzels and beer".

How to draw closer to that warm and happy vision? Why not start by planning your longed-for summer evenings now? Create your oasis. Start it and if you don't have the time to do it yourself, get a plan prepared for your balcony or terrace sky garden and avoid the No-plan Trap™. Understand your style. Imagine even more – to make your balcony or terrace where everyone wants to be, to gather in your newly created outdoor place as comfortable and beautiful as your living room. After all, comfort is perhaps the ultimate luxury.
